Premier League Game 1 Report/Stats

Game 1 of the Dunedin Ice Hockey Premier League kicked off last night with SK8 taking on the Stars.

Stars bench was full of green jerseys, with a significant number of youth players taking the ice for the team. SK8 ranks looked a bit thinner, with 9 skaters in front of Rick Parry.

Game started a little slowly, with SK8 getting the early lead with King left alone by the Stars defence putting one past Toby Schuck in net. Mathew Enright responded for Stars to beat Parry before King got a second on a rebound.

Midway throught he second Hicks replaced Schuck in net and stars started to build. Christos sneaks one into the goal from the left corner, somehow getting one between Parry’s pads and the goal post.

The game really fires up in the third. Mike Wesseling drives the net and puts his own rebound off Parry through the five hole for the Star’s first lead. A dust up in front of the net sees J. van Leeuwen go after SK8 defender Pesant and get boxed for roughing. Enright gets an insurance goal to put Stars up 4-2, and then van Leeuwen comes in with a hit from behind on SK8 forward McLaughlin which drives his face into the boards. He gets the door with a 10 + 2 seeing his game end prematurely.

DIHL Week 1 Report/Stats

Greetings DIHL players,

The first week of competition provided some good action. Thanks to Joyce, Jackie and Bronwyn for scoring, the game stats and standings are attached. Team reps, please record the player numbers and ensure that, if possible, they are kept the same each week. This makes it a lot easier for the scorers.

I know some aspects of this league are different from previous DIHLs so I’d like to emphasise a few points.
1. The no-break between periods was a surprise to many; the goal was to fit more playing time into the hour time slot by introducing stop-time for the final two minutes (regardless of score).
2. If you can’t make it to a game, let your team rep know well in advance. To keep team sizes reasonable I had to turn away quite a few players after the deadline. The players who didn’t make it on a team have been put on a reserve list to fill in for missing players. For this to work (and to be fair), team reps must contact me when they need an extra player(s) – I will then contact a reserve. Please do NOT organise replacements without contacting me.
3. MVPs for each team have been selected from a vote in the warm room (see starred names in the standings page). Selected players get a credit towards a beverage in the warm room.
4. Time slots for training sessions are available Sunday morning from 9-10am and 10-11am if anyone wants to organise them.

Thanks to everyone who helped get this off the ground! I’ll be away next week, so see you for Week 3.

Pete
